Not all heatmaps are created equal. Each type answers a fundamentally different question about user behavior, and using the wrong type for the wrong question leads to misleading conclusions.
Click Maps (Tap Maps on Mobile)
Click maps visualize where users click or tap. The most obvious use case — seeing which buttons get clicked — is also the least valuable. The real insight comes from unexpected patterns: clicks on non-interactive elements (indicating users expected a link or button that does not exist), clicks concentrated on secondary elements while the primary CTA is ignored, and click distribution across competing elements.
Scroll Maps
Scroll maps show what percentage of users reach each vertical point on the page. A steep drop-off at a specific section tells you that content below that point is invisible to most visitors. This directly informs information hierarchy: critical conversion elements placed below the scroll drop-off point are functionally nonexistent for the majority of your traffic.
Attention (Move/Hover) Maps
Attention maps track where users move their cursor or spend time looking (in the case of eye-tracking implementations). On desktop, cursor position correlates roughly with gaze direction — not perfectly, but enough to identify which content sections receive attention and which are skipped entirely.

What Is the Biggest Mistake When Interpreting Heatmaps?
A scroll map shows that 70% of users drop off before reaching your trust badges section. That is an observation. It does not tell you whether users left because the content above bored them, because they already found what they needed, or because the page loaded slowly. The heatmap shows the what. The why requires additional data.
This is why DRIP never uses heatmaps in isolation. Every heatmap analysis is paired with at least two additional data sources to triangulate the insight:
- Session recordings: watch 20-30 sessions of users who exhibited the pattern identified in the heatmap. This moves you from aggregate pattern to individual behavior narrative.
- Funnel data: check whether the heatmap pattern correlates with a conversion drop-off. If 60% of users never scroll to the trust badges but conversion rate is healthy, the badges may not be critical — do not move them above the fold just because the scroll map says users miss them.
- Quantitative analytics: segment the heatmap by device, traffic source, and new versus returning visitors. An aggregate heatmap hides segment-level differences that often explain the pattern.
The framework is: heatmaps generate observations, session recordings generate explanations, and funnel data determines whether the observation actually matters for revenue. Skip any step and you risk optimizing for the wrong problem.

This case study illustrates the full diagnostic power of heatmap analysis when combined with quantitative data and a behavioral framework.
The heatmap told us the first part: the search icon in the header received virtually zero attention. Click map data showed almost no interactions with the search element. The attention map confirmed that users' gaze (as proxied by cursor movement) consistently skipped over the small icon.
But the heatmap alone did not explain why search mattered or what to do about it. That required a behavioral model. We applied the BJ Fogg Behavior Model (B = MAP), which states that behavior occurs when Motivation, Ability, and a Prompt all converge at the same moment.
How Should You Analyze Heatmaps on Product Pages vs Collection Pages?
The diagnostic questions are different for each page type, which means the heatmap analysis approach should differ as well.
Product Detail Pages (PDPs)
- Click map: Is the Add to Cart button the dominant click target? Are users clicking on product images (trying to zoom)? Are there dead clicks on review stars or benefit icons?
- Scroll map: What percentage of users reach the product description, the reviews section, and the trust badges? If your key selling point is below the fold and 60% of users never see it, that is a priority fix.
- Attention map: Where do users pause? Long attention on price elements may indicate price sensitivity or comparison behavior. Attention on sizing information may indicate uncertainty that a size guide could resolve.
Product Listing Pages (PLPs / Collection Pages)
- Click map: How many products on the grid actually receive clicks? If only the first 4-6 products get attention, your sorting or above-the-fold product count matters more than the total catalog size.
- Scroll map: How far down the collection do users scroll? A steep drop-off after the first screen of products suggests that the initial view needs to be optimized — better sorting, fewer products above the fold, or stronger visual differentiation.
- Filter and sort interactions: If filter usage is low on a large catalog page, users may not know filters exist or may find them too complex. This is a critical usability gap that heatmaps reveal immediately.
The KoRo test is a clean example of the diagnostic chain: scroll map revealed the problem (products hidden below oversized category header), the behavioral principle explained why it mattered (decision simplification — reducing effort to evaluate options), and the test confirmed the hypothesis with measurable revenue impact.
What Is a Practical Heatmap Analysis Workflow?
Most teams look at a heatmap, notice something surprising, and immediately jump to a test idea. This skips the critical middle steps — validation and behavioral reasoning — and produces tests that are based on observations but not grounded in understanding.
Step 1: Collect Sufficient Data
A heatmap based on 200 sessions is noise. Aim for a minimum of 1,000 sessions per heatmap to get a reliable pattern. For pages with lower traffic, aggregate data over a longer period — but avoid spanning across major site changes that would contaminate the pattern.
Step 2: Observe Without Interpreting
Document what you see before you explain it. "70% of users do not scroll past the hero section" is an observation. "Users are not interested in the content below" is an interpretation — and possibly wrong. Separate the two to avoid confirmation bias.
Step 3: Triangulate With Other Data
Cross-reference the heatmap observation with session recordings, funnel analytics, and segment data. Does the pattern hold across all segments or just specific ones? Does the pattern correlate with a conversion drop-off? Is this a new pattern or has it been stable for months?
Step 4: Hypothesize With a Behavioral Model
Only after triangulation should you generate a test hypothesis. The hypothesis should specify: what behavioral principle explains the pattern, what specific change will address it, and what metric you expect to move. This prevents the most common failure mode: treating heatmap analysis as a random walk through colorful images.

Your job is not to pick the most appealing one — it is to gather additional data that eliminates the wrong explanations.
